How Much Profit?

The Non-flammable, 0% V.O.C., rapid cure process that Custom Linings uses will be in greater demand in the future. The EPA is becoming more strict and is now coming down on the shops and business's that are contaminating the environment. Pre-Setup Checklist

In order to ensure a smooth transition into your new Custom Linings dealership purchase, there are mandatory equipment, fixtures and setup procedures that must be in place prior to the delivery and installation of your Custom Linings coating equipment. If you would like assistance in setting up and preparing for the installation of your new equipment, an additional day can be set aside for that purpose. There is a nominal fee for this service.

Facility Air Requirements:

  • Air compressor installed with power (tested)
  • Air pressure regulator (1/2" or 3/4") installed in line at compressor
  • Air drier or water separator installed in line
  • At spray machine installation location 1/2" or 3/4" steel pipe air line with 3 Tee fitting (1/2" FIP) spaced 2 feet apart: We will provide the fitting to go into the 3 Tee's
  • 1 each 25-20' of 3/8" air hose for blowing gun and other misc. fittings.
Electrical Requirements:
  • 220 VAC 50 amp receptacle on the wall (within 6 feet of machine installation) along with a plug assembly to attach to machine. (Plug will be intalled on machine at time of installation)
  • 110 VAC to plug in fresh air system for person spraying.

Ventilation System:

Note- Ventilation system should be installed prior to commencing full time spray operation, however installation and training on the equipment can take place without this system installed.

  • System installed along with filters (standard fiber glass filters work well) to filter air in the spray area to the outside.

Spray Area:

  • Minimum 14' wide by 24' deep with not less than 8' ceilings (10-12' is ideal)
  • What you need in a spray area is the following: 6 mil clear plastic sheeting on the walls, rosin paper on the floor, seams duct taped and the door way to your equipment area overlapped with plastic to keep your equipment clean.


  • The area to set up your equipment should be free of clutter, have a ¾”copper (or other suitable material) air line with ½” female pipe fittings to allow Custom Linings to attach supply hoses to equipment, 1each 220 VAC 50AMP receptacle w/plug and 2 each 110 AC outlets for drum heaters or other accessories.

  • Other things to keep in mind when configuring your spray area is to ensure you have plenty of light and a simple ventilation system to catch any over spray that you may generate during the texture process of any spray job.
  • Please note the sheet metal duct work on the back wall. This system includes a slide in air filter element and discharge fan to the outside of the building. Since our coating systems are non-hazardous and non-flammable, by the time any overspray hits the fan, it is in the form of dust, and there is not an issue with venting exhaust fan air to the outside of your facility.

    EXAMPLE FREE STANDING SPRAY AREA

Material Storage Area:

  • This is usually where the machine is installed. Area to hold not less than 655 gallons drums of material. Material must be stored on pallets or strips of 2X4 lumber.
  • Must be temperature controlled for heat (maintain not less than 70 degrees F for material in use. Material in storage should be maintained at not less than 50 degrees F.)

Material Cost & Yield

Polyurea coating material for bed liner and other industrial coatings are delivered 110 gallons at a time, called a drum set (2 ea. 55 gallon drums).

Compare Spray Liner Systems

through a dry-wall hopper

Application: Material is pumped out of 55 gallon drums into a Proportioner machine that heats material to about 170 degrees and pressurizes it to about 2200 PSI. The material is pumped through heated hose assemblies and actually mixes at the tip of the triggered gun. Material is not mixed until the trigger on the gun. Material is not mixed until the trigger on the gun is pulled and mixing stops after the trigger is released. This allows for stops and starts at any rate during the process (like when moving around the truck or spraying a separate assembly in the spray area). When the trigger is released, not only does material mixing and flow stop, but the gun "self cleans" with pressurized air. when the material is sprayed onto the prepared surface, it is dry to the touch in about 5 seconds. This allows for fast and efficient jobs usually complete and back to the customer in less than 2 hours.

Application: Materials processed out of 55 gallon drums or smaller reservoirs that materials must be pumped into. Then materials are processed via low pressure pumps (100 PSI range) at room temperature through a handheld mixing device that consists of a small plastic straw device that mixes the material as it is pumped out onto the truck bed surface. The machines have no triggers, so material flows until the machine is turned off. Materials are not temperature controlled by the machine and much waste can occur without the ability to control material flow. Every time the machine is turned off, the plastic straw " mixing tube" must be changed at a cost of $5.00 to $10.00 each. this piece must be changed every time without exception. When the material reaches the bed it takes 20-60 seconds for the material to "set up". The application process combined with the slow material dry time results in a "lumpy", un-uniform coating that in many cases resembles "cottage cheese".

Application: Material is delivered in quart and gallon cans. Materials are mixed with a drill and poured into a hopper gun that serves as a tool to spatter material on to the applied surface. A primer is usually used for adhesion. Material takes hours to e dry to the touch and days (sometimes weeks) to thoroughly dry. These high solvent based materials (up to 40%) have several drawbacks. You must remember if a product is 40% solvent based, 40% of the material that you mixed and sprayed onto your truck bed will evaporate during drying. For every gallon of material you apply (128 ounces), 51 ounces of the material is going to evaporate during the drying process. To apply 5 gallon application of dried material it will take 8. gallons at a cost of $____ per gallon X (times) number of gallons (8,) equals= $_____/ This is how much it will cost to provide 5 gallons of cured material. I would assume most applicators are applying 1- gallons of material. this would allow for a very thin coat.

Note: You must filling the blanks with the cost of material by the gallon and multiply that by 8. (i.e. $50 per gallon time 8. equals $415 in chemical to provide a five gallon application of dried material. This calculation was based on a %40 percent solvent content for a leading brand of bed liner that you mix packaged in gallons or quarts.

Materials: EPA approved, Solvent Free, Non-Flammable, 0% V.O.C.'s Non-hazardous for shipping, storage, and disposal. Chemical mixing ratio is 1:1 by volume performed at the gun, without the need for measuring, mixing with a drill, ect... Materials are purchased and shipped in "drum sets" (2 55 gallon drums or 110 gallons). No primers are ever used; can be applied without a spray booth.

Materials: Typically, Solvent Free and Non-Flammable. Chemical mixing ratios vary from 1:2-1: by volume performed via separate pumps. Primers that may be used require a spray booth and are flammable. these are suggested for best product adhesion.

Materials: Materials are highly flammable and contain V.O.C.'s. V.O.C.'s stand for Volatile Organic Compounds which are materials that are hazardous to the environment and atmosphere. You must have a spray booth to apply these products. City inspectors, the fire department, and the EPA are very interested i the facilities that apply these hazardous products. If you doubt the previous statement, Please look at the Material Safety Data Sheet of the materials used to perform this type of product application and then check with your local city code enforcement office or the EPA. Chemically these products are classified as automotive paints. Would you run a body shop without EPA approved spray booth? For very long? When the EPA or fire department comes by to see your operation, would you be facing high fines and several fire code violations.

Material Cost: $20 - $28 per gallon

Material Cost: Ranges from $23-$25 per gallon

Material Cost: Ranges from $35 per gallon up to $75 per gallon.

Finished Product: Factory installed appearance, thick coat - 1/8" to 1/4" thick in all areas. Tight uniform texture. What today's truck owners demand.

Finished Product: Often "lumpy" with "runs or sags". Cottage Cheese looks, not very attractive. State of the art 15 years ago, but not today.

Finished Product: Often very thin. Sometimes lumpy or fiber like in appearance, depending on the applicator.
